Because of the increase in participation in
contact sports, concussions have become a national health concern. New
technology has been created to detect traumatic impact immediately after a
collision has occurred. This technology embeds sensors into sports-specific
equipment and transmits data to a base station that determines if the force of
the impact was dangerous enough to permit medical attention. These sensors are in helmets, attachments for helmets, chin straps, mouth guards, and even headbands. This detection
prevents athletes from playing with a concussion and keeps individuals from
risk of further injury or death.
